Young Professional Spotlight: Kimberly Knight

Kimberly Knight a 42-year-old funeral director and office manager at James A. Dyal Funeral Home in Summerville, South Carolina.

How long have you worked in funeral service?

I have worked in funeral service for 13 years as a greeter doing the visitations for James A. Dyal Funeral Home, and then came on full-time five years ago and have been a funeral director for two years.

Why did you begin working in funeral service?

I started working at the funeral home as a greeter. They were looking for someone and it fit my schedule and so I began doing that. I then fell in love with ministering to the families. I lost my parents at a young age, so I understood the importance of death and the funeral process.

What is the most rewarding part of your occupation?

I love serving families. It is not a job to me, it is a ministry.

What are your professional goals?

My goal is to continue serving the families in our community and minister to them in any way I can.

What are you proud of that you have achieved so far during your career in funeral service?

I was a wife, mother, youth pastor’s wife and full-time employee, so I wore many hats and I went to school to be a funeral director when I was 40 and succeeded at the top of my class.

What are some important/notable trends that you have noticed in funeral service?

I have seen cremation increase more since I started working in the industry.

How do you spend your time outside of work? Is there anything in particular that you enjoy
doing?

I love serving in my church. My husband is a youth pastor, so I love spending time with all the youth outside of work. We also enjoy camping and boating and spending time with my family.

What are three of your personal goals?

  1. Continue to serve families with compassion.
  2. Continue to stay on top of funeral changes and trends.
  3. Be the wife and mother that God has called me to be and balance it with serving in the funeral industry.

Who or what inspires you?

Above all, the Lord Jesus Christ inspires me to always show the light of Him in my life. The joy that I have definitely comes from Him.

What is your favorite phone app?

My favorite app on my phone is probably TikTok. I love to end my day with laughter.

What is one thing your peers would be surprised to know about you?

I love NASCAR and fishing.

What is one thing that you think is just “golden,” wonderful or exciting?

I think what is golden is waking up every morning and God giving me another day to glorify Him.

What do you value most about OGR?

I am new to OGR so I am excited about learning more.

The organization as a whole tries to ‘follow the Golden Rule.’ What other words do you try
to live by?

My parents always taught me to treat others the way you want to be treated and to always allow Christ to be shown in your life in everything you say and do.
